When Maya Moore came to Storrs prior to the 2007-08 campaign, UConn women’s basketball fans began to focus on the season ahead and let the disappointing outcomes from the previous three years fade from memory. Moore was the #1 player coming out of high school and chose UConn over rival Tennessee, which immediately raised expectations for Geno’s Huskies and worsened an already rocky relationship between the two storied college basketball programs.
Moore proved to be the real deal and helped UConn go 15-1 in the Big East during her first year in the league. The Huskies’ impressive record earned them the conference regular-season title and they proceeded to win the Big East tournament title as well once postseason play got underway. Despite a deep run in the NCAA tournament, UConn’s season came to an end when they fell to fellow women’s college basketball heavyweight Stanford in the Final Four. Moore and the Huskies finished the year with a 36-2 record and would use this season as a stepping stone to the decade of dominance that followed.
This touching tribute to the 2007-08 season includes in-depth player profiles and highlights the most memorable moments from Moore and the Huskies during that pivotal campaign:
